Pink Shirt Day

Pink Shirt Day started in 2007 in Canada. A new student wore a pink polo shirt on  his first day at a new high school and some of his peers directed homophobic comments his way. As a show of support the next day a group of 50 senior students all wore pink to school to show that verbal bullying will not be accepted at their school. Since then the movement has gone worldwide. Now in its 10th year Pink Shirt Day is well and truly part of Newlands College culture.

Teachers today had conversations with classes around what verbal bullying can sound like. One particular aspect that I would like to touch on, and is far too common in our society is the use of the word 'gay' as a synonym for bad, unpopular, or inferior. I have advised my students to avoid the use of words like this in this context, and to call out others who use these words in an incorrect way. Pink Shirt Day is just one way we can support all members of our society and continue to educate ourselves about the impact our words can have.  Also we have some extreme pink fashion going on around school! All makes for good fun
